About this book
The London Burial Grounds presents notes on the history of burial places from the earliest times to the present day. The account describes a Roman Catholic burial-ground in Duncan Terrace, Islington, asphalted for a boys' school, with tombstones and a figure of the Virgin Mary enclosed on its north side. The account of Woolwich describes a burial-ground encroached upon through school enlargement, with three graves in a railed enclosure in the middle of a tar-paved yard.
The entry for the German Lutheran Church in Little Alie Street records a small yard behind the church and marks the ground closed. The book quotes an epitaph from Lambeth promising that the person buried will never trouble the reader again.
