About this book
Walter Besant begins London's history with the shape of its ground: riverbanks, marshes, hills and the small streams that helped determine where settlement could grow. He sets an old foundation legend beside the evidence of documents, excavations and surviving buildings. Published in 1894, this history uses a sequence of lessons to move through Roman, Saxon and Norman London toward later city life.
Individual chapters turn to bridges, hospitals, churches, trade, public entertainments and civic government. In the account of Westminster, courtly colour and ceremony sit beside the working life of an abbey, with its bakers, builders, clerks and farmers. The result offers readers interested in London a way to connect familiar landmarks with the institutions and daily occupations around them. Besant's attention to geography also makes the book useful for understanding how a city's physical site can shape its history.
