About this book

Deucalion has spent twenty years governing Yucatan for Atlantis when an imperial command abruptly replaces him with his old friend Tatho. The ceremony of golden halls, jeweled chains and formal bows conceals the uncertain purpose of Empress Phorenice's recall. Speaking privately, the two men compare loyalty, public reputation and the risks of serving a ruler whose wishes carry the force of law.

The novel tells its story through Deucalion's own account, combining an imagined ancient civilization with arguments about government, religious duty and changing beliefs. A later scene places him among priests defending the Sacred Mountain, where knowledge of a narrow mountain road becomes crucial to their survival.
