About this book

The Lost Guidon is by Charles Egbert Craddock, dated 1911. The text describes the direful rain, always the sequence of the shock of battle, steadily falling on the stricken field. A cavalryman in a gray uniform with a sergeant's chevrons rides down the highway at a slow pace, shouting at intervals a call to rally on the guidon. The cavalryman is scarcely more than a boy, with a bare head of flaxen curls like a child's.

A woman asks a man in what school he acquired his trenchant style, and he thinks of the tiny district school where he had acquired the very little he knew. The music of the orchestra reaches them from the ball-room, with the rhythmic beat of dancing feet. The chaplain says he slipped the flag-staff, guidon and all, into a crevice of the rocks, where it will remain till the end of our time.
