About this book
The Riddle of the Rocks is by Charles Egbert Craddock and carries the date 1895. Two great tilted blocks of sandstone lie among the Great Smoky Mountains, at the verge of strange stunted woods. The blocks are of marked regularity of shape, as square as if hewn with a chisel, and both are splintered and fissured.
A man with a rifle often kneels beside the rocks and seeks to decipher the mystic legends. The man's face is described bending over the tables of the Law with the earnest research of a student. Certain brethren of a camp-meeting are roused to wrath when the man appears among them, arrogating to himself peculiar spiritual experiences and proclaiming that his mind had been opened to strange lore. A character says that they heard someone tell about the scriptures graven on tables that Moses flung down, and that they would come to read some for themselves.
