About this book

Eight-year-old Fred Carleton finds a Maltese kitten and gives her milk. He would like to keep her, but his sister Hatty reminds him that she belongs to Ned Perry. At his mother's request, Fred carries the kitten back through the mud. The walk takes some effort, and Mrs. Perry's failure to thank him leaves him feeling unfairly treated.

Fred's complaint gives his mother a chance to talk about gratitude. As she works on a new gray suit for him, she asks him to consider the care he receives and the thanks he gives to God. Madeline Leslie connects an ordinary childhood disappointment with prayer, family affection, and Christian duty. An instructive story told by the mother carries the lesson further. Young readers who enjoy domestic tales with an openly religious purpose will find a child learning to look beyond his own wish for recognition.
