Aircraft circle above Fort Sill while Bill learns the habits and vocabulary of an Army post. His companion Frank, the son of an Air Service major, knows the place well and enjoys showing off that knowledge. A caged tarantula and Bill's small motorcar give the boys plenty to argue about, but their differences reach beyond pets and machines. Frank urges Bill to find a way around a promise to his mother; Bill insists on keeping its meaning as well as its words.

This aviation adventure for young readers combines military surroundings with everyday tests of nerve and loyalty. In a later episode, strange breathing in the dark makes the boys suspect an intruder, turning bedtime into a scene of whispered plans and mounting alarm. Their banter and contrasting reactions give the story its humor.
