About this book

The Lure of the Mask is a novel by Harold MacGrath, with illustrations by Harrison Fisher and Karl Anderson. Its chapter titles include "The Voice in the Fog", "Madame Angot", "Blindfolded", "The Mask", "Carabinieri", "The City in the Sea", "Kitty Drops a Bandbox" and "The Aria from Il Trovatore".

One passage describes John Hillard: born in Sorrento, educated in Rome up to his fifteenth year, fatherless and motherless at twenty, a man who loves his Raphaels, Titians and Dante without wishing to imitate them. In another, Kitty and a woman called La Signorina talk about two men, Mr. Hillard and Mr. Merrihew, and Kitty says she knows Mr. Hillard is a gentleman. La Signorina tells Kitty she is free to choose one of two paths, and Kitty says she has chosen. Elsewhere Merrihew hurries a distressed Hillard away from the Villa Ariadne, intent on reaching Florence.
