About this book
Hearts and Masks is by Harold MacGrath, with illustrations by Harrison Fisher. The list of illustrations includes, among others, five people dressed for costume ball, four sitting, one standing, and the line “Madame, will you do me the honor to raise your mask?” The narrator knows the club’s M. F. H., Teddy Hamilton, and determines to attend a dance, happen what might.
At a long marble-topped table the narrator sees an old man reading a paper and the handsomest girl he has set eyes upon in a month of moons. In a dialogue, one speaker says, “I want you to get me out of this cellar; and quickly, too.” A man named Haggerty says the rascal has nothing more serious than a splintered bone, and adds that he is a dead shot.
