About this book

Jimmieboy is supposed to be resting before his father's birthday supper when he hears drums in the nursery. A quiet landscape above the fireplace comes alive with marching tin soldiers, and their colonel brings alarming news. An animal called the Parallelopipedon has escaped from the toy ark and is causing havoc in the country beyond the picture's bend. The boy's familiar playthings become the starting point for a children's fantasy full of military bustle and improbable creatures.

John Kendrick Bangs builds the comedy through a child's literal questions, absurd explanations and lively exchanges. In another encounter, a troublesome creature called an unfairy takes credit for spoiled toys and other small disasters, then admits how lonely his mean habits have made him. Readers can enjoy the talking toys and verbal jokes while following Jimmieboy's plainspoken responses to mischief, kindness and the wish to change.
