About this book
The Magnificent Lovers (Les Amants magnifiques) is a play. The opening note says that the subject of this play was given by Louis XIV and that it was acted before him at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, on February 4, 1670, but was never represented in Paris and was only printed after Molière's death. The preface by the author says that the King, who will have nothing but what is magnificent in all he undertakes, wished to give his court an entertainment which should comprise all that the stage can furnish.
The text calls the spectacle a magnificent compliment paid by one of the princes to the princesses during their maritime excursion. A speaker named Neptune says that he ranks among the gods of greatest might and that Jove himself hath placed him on this height. One speaker labelled Eri asks Sostratus which of the two he would prefer and which one he would have her marry, and Sos answers that the inclination of Madam, not his wishes, must decide the matter.
