About this book

Inside Harpagon’s house in Paris, love must contend with a father’s devotion to money. Élise has promised herself to Valère, who saved her from the waves and entered her father’s service to stay near her. She fears family anger and public criticism, while Valère explains how he wins Harpagon’s approval by echoing his opinions. Her brother Cléante has his own attachment to Marianne, a young neighbour caring for her ill mother. The cast also names Harpagon as Marianne’s admirer, placing father and son in competition.

Molière’s comedy, first performed in 1668, appears here in Charles Heron Wall’s English prose translation, with an introduction and explanatory notes. Its household arguments turn small expenses into theatrical disputes. When Master Jacques proposes a generous supper, Harpagon protests, and Valère supplies lofty reasons for serving less food. Readers can follow how flattery makes greed sound like wisdom, and how family affection struggles against the authority of the person controlling the purse.

About the author

Molière

Molière, born Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (1622-1673), was the leading comic playwright and actor of the age of Louis XIV. His satires of hypocrisy, pretension, and folly, among them Tartuffe, The Misanthrope, and The Miser, remain cornerstones of the French theatrical tradition.
