About this book

The Pretentious Young Ladies is presented as a comedy in one act, the original in prose, dated 1659. The introductory notice says Molière began in The Pretentious Young Ladies to paint men and women as they are, and to make living characters and existing manners the ground-work of his plays. The notice says the comedy, in prose, was first acted at Paris, at the Théâtre du Petit Bourbon, on the 18th of November, 1659, and met with great success. The notice says that through the influence of some noble précieux and précieuses the comedy was forbidden until the 2d of December, and that it ran for four months together.

In the dialogue, a speaker labelled 2 CHAIR asks to be paid, and a speaker labelled MASC. gives him a box on the ear and answers: "What, scoundrel, to ask money from a person of my rank!" A speaker labelled LA GR. says that they shall not have the advantage of our clothes to dazzle your eyes, and calls for them to be stripped immediately. A speaker labelled JOD. says: "Farewell, a long farewell to all our fine clothes."
