Chapter I shows Barry Raymond letting himself into his small flat in Kensington just as the clock in the tiny hall chimes the hour of ten on a wet night. Mrs. Moody asks Toni quietly whether she would care to undertake the post of governess-companion to the two small children, and Toni hesitates for a moment.
