About this book
A conversation above New York's Distributing Reservoir leads to a young man's account of a dangerous night in the water. Hoping to catch pike despite the posted warning, he hides inside the reservoir walls to spend the night fishing. His attempt to climb closer to the fish ends with a fall, and the smooth stone walls offer little purchase as he tries to find a way out.
Charles Fenno Hoffman sets the young man's ordeal against views of the city's rivers, autumn foliage and changing moonlight. The speaker mixes his struggle to stay afloat with elaborate thoughts of Mary, their shared interests and the awkward consequences of their engagement becoming known. His playful manner keeps interrupting the fear in his recollection. Readers will find a short adventure told through conversation, with city scenery, literary allusions and uneasy humor all shaping its account of a rash decision.
