About this book

Heat, biting insects and a schooner stuck on a sandbank leave Rob Harlow thoroughly dissatisfied with his surroundings. While the English boy tries to fish from a boat, Shadrach Naylor, called Shaddy, answers his complaints with teasing advice. Their conversation gradually turns toward the forests and smaller waterways of the Grand Chaco, and Rob begins to see more in the landscape than discomfort.

In George Manville Fenn's adventure for young readers, travel brings wildlife encounters alongside the ordinary demands of keeping a boat and its equipment in order. A later scene shows Rob upset about leaving a puma behind while his companions search for a stopping place and dry their belongings after a storm. Shaddy's jokes meet the boy's wounded feelings, making their relationship part of the action. The novel offers readers an outdoor story grounded in fishing, weather, animal life and the tensions of travelling together.
