About this book

Young Nat looks forward to exploring rivers and forests with Uncle Dick, a doctor who collects natural history specimens. A steamer captain warns them about fever, uncertain waterways and getting lost, but Dick intends to continue their expedition along the coast of South America. Their boat offers the means to reach bird collecting grounds, while the captain's harsh treatment of a ship's boy makes both travellers eager to leave the vessel.

George Manville Fenn presents this children's adventure through Nat's own account, giving practical preparations and moments of danger the same immediate attention. A puma pins Nat beneath its body, and Pete fears that an attempt to help could hurt him. Nat's efforts to think clearly under pressure bring the scene close to the reader. The story combines an interest in natural history with suspense about what unfamiliar country and wildlife may bring.
