About this book
A farmer's confidence meets the complications of city life when Uncle Josh Weathersby visits New York. Cal Stewart gives his fictional country storyteller a voice full of rural expressions, elaborate comparisons and cheerful misunderstandings. In the opening account, a sleeping car becomes a source of trouble as Josh struggles with his clothes, boots and a treasured collar button. Familiar farm experience supplies his explanations for the unfamiliar things around him.
Back in Punkin Centre, the comedy turns on neighbours who pride themselves on knowing a good bargain. Si Pettingill brings brooms to Ezra Hoskins's store, where their negotiations draw an audience of local regulars. Poems and short sketches sit alongside these spoken yarns in this 1903 collection. The appeal lies in the timing of Josh's narration, the shop talk and the way everyday dealings grow into occasions for extravagant storytelling.
