About this book

Saladin and Electra Foster have built a comfortable family life in Lakeside through steady wages, careful saving and a productive garden. Then a distant relative promises them thirty thousand dollars, with the peculiar condition that they must show no interest in the gift while he lives. Their attention slips from work and children to calculations of future riches. Mark Twain follows the distance between their practical habits and the grand plans that suddenly fill their evenings.

The collection ranges beyond this household comedy into stories and sketches about conversation, language learning, writing machines and the telling of stories. Another passage follows a visitor through a carefully furnished home, where his host delights in every sign of his wife's care. These small observations give the volume a texture of everyday speech and domestic detail. Readers can find both financial fantasy and quieter scenes of affection among its varied pieces.
