About this book
The Manufacture of Paper by R. W. Sindall includes illustrations and a bibliography of works relating to cellulose and paper-making. The preface identifies engineering and chemistry as important parts of paper-making, while observing that the engineer's and chemist's functions are generally regarded as independent. The quoted researches trace the beginnings of rag-paper preparation to the Chinese in the fifth or fourth centuries, or even earlier.
The quoted account says starch sizing was already known to the Arabs in the eighth century as a means of improving paper. A sodium carbonate table supplies percentages by weight and quantities in pounds for solutions of various densities.
