About this book
The Chemistry of Hat Manufacturing is a set of lectures delivered before the Hat Manufacturers' Association by Watson Smith. The preface says the book is the substance of a series of lectures delivered before the Hat Manufacturers' Association in the years 1887 and 1888. On silk, the text says that a silk fibre may be considered as a kind of rod of solidified flexible gum, secreted in and exuded from glands placed on the side of the body of the silk-worm.
The text says that bichromate of potash with sulphuric acid gives sulphate of potash and chromic acid. A passage on silk says the silk fibre has two distinct parts: the central portion, the true fibre, chemically termed fibroïn, and an envelope, chemically termed sericin.
