About this book
The Maya Indians of Southern Yucatan and Northern British Honduras is a bulletin by Thomas W. F. Gann. Part 1 of the contents is headed Customs, Ceremonies, and Mode of Life and lists, among others, Habitat, Dress, Agriculture, Hunting and Fishing. The text says that both men and women are capable of considerable and prolonged exertion, and that men can carry loads of 150 pounds for 20 miles in the macapal, a netted bag slung over the back and held up by a band passing round the forehead.
The text says mounds erected over the ruins of buildings are extremely common all through this part of the Maya area. Excavating one mound yielded nothing except a fragment of a conch-shell trumpet, a piece of an obsidian knife, numerous potsherds, and half of a flint paint grinder. The text says that in 1863 the Icaichè were beaten by the Santa Cruz.
