About this book
The Wild Tribes of Davao District, Mindanao is by Fay-Cooper Cole, and its contents list sections on the Bagobo, Bila-an, Kulaman, Tagakaolo, Ata and Mandaya. The tribal historians say the human race sprang from a man, Toglái, and his wife, Toglibon, who lived on Mt. Apo. The text says schools have been opened in some localities and, together with the activities of Catholic and Protestant missionaries, are causing a rapid change in the life and beliefs of the tribe.
The text says that one couple carried with them a small basket called bira-an, and for this reason their children are known as Bira-an (Bila-an). A discussion of all the clothing worn by members of the tribe says some cotton is grown and is used in the manufacture of jackets, but the bulk of the garments are of hemp.
