About this book
The Measure of a Man is a book by Amelia E. Barr. The preface says the purpose in writing this novel was to honor and magnify the sweetness and dignity of the condition of Motherhood. The book is dedicated to Mrs. Arthur Roberts of Evanston, Illinois.
On the second evening the Captain comes to eat his dinner with John, and tells Mr. Hatton that the storm is over. The talk includes the line "The Pentland roared and raged a bit, but the sea has her Master." The Lady of Hatton Hall leaves her daughter-in-law penetrated with a new sense of her position, and the parting remarks include "I am thy true friend, Jane, that is something better than thy mother-in-law."
