About this book
The Methods of Glass Blowing and of Working Silica in the Oxy-Gas Flame, for the use of chemical and physical students, is by W. A. Shenstone, F.R.S. The preface says the book consists of a reprint of the third edition of the author's Methods of Glass-blowing, together with a new chapter describing the comparatively new art of working vitreous silica. The preface says Chapter V gives a short account of the methods of graduating and calibrating glass apparatus for use in quantitative experiments.
On the working-place, the text says the blow-pipe must be placed in a position perfectly free from draughts, and should not face a window, nor be in too strong a light, if that can be avoided. For blowing a bulb or globe of glass, the text says it is very important that the glass tube employed shall be of uniform substance. The text on silica says it is very apt to exhibit a phenomenon resembling devitrification during working, and becomes covered with a white incrustation.
