About this book

Glue, Gelatine, Animal Charcoal, Phosphorous, Cements, Pastes and Mucilages is by F. Dawidowsky, technical chemist, and its title page says it comprises the raw materials and manufacture of skin and bone glue, different varieties of glue, animal charcoal, phosphorus, gelatine and products prepared from it. The title page also names isinglass and fish-glue, methods of testing glue and gelatine, and the preparation and application of cements, pastes and mucilages for use in the workshop, laboratory, and office. The title page says the work is edited from the German, with extensive additions, including a description of the most recent processes, by William T. Brannt.

The contents list chapters headed, among others, Classification of Cements and Preparation of Cements, Pastes, and Mucilages. The contents also list, among others, oil cements, putty and its preparation, French putty, soft putty, litharge cement, red lead cement and cement for wash basins. The text says leather pulp, when mixed with rags or woody fibre, gives a substitute for leather which is very tough and of good appearance.
