About this book

Nicholas Crips can turn a shabby coat and a courteous voice into a convincing claim on somebody else's purse. Called Nickie the Kid, he opens Edward Dyson's comic novel by seeking help for a supposed weak heart. When a bag of bottles comes his way, he adopts the manner of a medical expert and offers one mixture under different names to suit his customers. The comedy rests on the distance between his polished speech and his opportunistic conduct.

Later scenes follow Professor Thunder's Museum of Marvels through bush towns, where the Missing Link attraction draws crowds and unwelcome scrutiny. A rooftop rescue gives the show a burst of publicity that threatens to expose its deception. Around the caravan's campfire, meals, homesickness and personal rivalries bring the performers into closer view. Readers can enjoy the sharp dialogue while watching respectability and public curiosity become useful tools for enterprising showmen.
