About this book

Autumn rain and an almost empty country house surround Myra Ingleby as she waits for news of her husband, away at war. Even the restless little poodle at her heels adds to the strain. A telegram announcing a visit from Sir Deryck Brand brings welcome relief, and their conversation introduces a woman whose social ease cannot conceal her loneliness. Florence Louisa Barclay's 1910 romance begins with this contrast between outward comfort and inward unease.

The later coastal scenes give the story a different rhythm. Myra and Jim Airth walk the cliffs, return to Horseshoe Cove and practise swimming, while other hotel guests watch their friendship with curiosity and disapproval. Barclay makes room for teasing exchanges and small misunderstandings alongside emotional uncertainty. Readers interested in older British romances will find country house manners, seaside freedom and the tension between private feeling and public expectations.
