About this book

At Court Leys, a neglected estate near Blackstable in Kent, Bertha watches a bleak November afternoon with restless expectation. She lives with her aunt, Miss Ley, whose dry wit and carefully guarded feelings contrast with the younger woman's private intensity. The opening of W. Somerset Maugham's 1902 novel places these two independent women among crumbling signs of family prosperity, where affection, manners and the wish for freedom shape everyday life.

Marriage becomes the book's central concern. In a later scene, Bertha is recovering from illness while neighbours turn her distress into material for social conversation. As her strength returns, so does her longing for Edward's affection. Maugham sets intimate feeling beside the sharp talk of fashionable callers, including their opinions about clergy and class. Readers interested in domestic fiction will find a close study of emotional need, social reserve and the difference between outward composure and inward feeling.

About the author

W. Somerset Maugham

W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was one of the most popular British authors of the twentieth century, working across the novel, the short story, and the stage. He trained as a physician and served in wartime intelligence, experiences that sharpened his clear prose and unsentimental view of people.
