About this book
Mark Hurdlestone; or, The Two Brothers is by Mrs. Moodie, who is described as the sister of Agnes Strickland and author of Roughing It in the Bush. Mrs. Hurdlestone, eager to secure for her darling Algernon those advantages which his brother Mark had so uncourteously declined, laid close siege to the heart of the old Squire. Mrs. Hurdlestone and brother Alfred had never ceased to talk to the old man, and at him, for the last three months.
The Captain tells Dorothy that if she continues to torment that poor child with her eternal sermons, he will be compelled to send her from the house. A person seized by the constables had no money in his possession, and a pair of pistols was found in his coat pocket, one recently used and the other still loaded.
