About this book

The Money Market is by F. Straker. The text says that the formation of a bank with more than six partners was supposed to have been expressly prohibited by the Bank’s Charter. The text adds that the direct result of this presumed prohibition was the establishment throughout the country of a large number of small private banks.

The text puts the paid-up capital of the joint-stock banks of England and Wales at about forty-four million pounds at the end of 1892, not including the Bank of England, and says it had only increased to about forty-seven and a half million pounds by the end of 1902. An appendix titled The Gold Reserve says much interest has been aroused in the matter by a suggestion made by Mr. J. Herbert Tritton, the President of the Institute of Bankers. The text says that every clearing bank must keep an account with the Bank of England, in accordance with the rules of the Clearing House. The text says greatness is not thrust upon any bank clerk, but it is in the power of all, if they will, to achieve it, to a greater or less degree.
