About this book
The Problem of the Rupee, Its Origin and Its Solution is B. R. Ambedkar's work on Indian currency, printed in London in 1923. The title page names him as sometime Professor of Political Economy at the Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics, Bombay, and the book is dedicated to the memory of his father and mother. His preface says it gives an account of the events that led to the establishment of the exchange standard and examines its theoretical basis.
The sampled pages discuss currency in detail. One passage argues that the rupee keeping its gold value does not rule out Indian prices being higher than gold prices, and names wheat, hides, rice and oil seeds as international commodities among India's exports. Another takes up free coinage and sets an open Mint, left to individuals, against a closed Mint managed by the Government. A third says the Secretary of State had to choose between sending out gold and issuing paper.
