About this book
A Tract on Monetary Reform is John Maynard Keynes's book on money, dated October 1923 in its preface. He dedicates it, in his own words humbly and without permission, to the Governors and Court of the Bank of England. The contents list five chapters: the consequences to society of changes in the value of money, public finance and changes in the value of money, the theory of money and the exchanges, alternative aims in monetary policy, and positive suggestions for the future regulation of money.
The first chapter makes the point that money is only important for what it will procure. One passage applies the theory of purchasing power parity to sterling, francs and lire in terms of dollars since 1919, with charts and tables. Another suggests that the Treasury's demand be timed against trade demand so as to ease the seasonal fluctuation of the exchanges discussed in Chapter III.
