About this book
The Mystery of Francis Bacon is a work by William T. Smedley. A motto in the opening pages, credited to Novum Organum, Chap. CX, says that the human mind in the course of invention first distrusts and then despises itself. The contents list names, among others, chapters called Sources of Information, At Cambridge and Early Compositions.
A chapter headed The Stock from Which Bacon Came reports that Nicholas Bacon is said to have been born at Chislehurst, in Kent, in 1509. The same chapter says Nicholas Bacon and William Cecil, each being a widower, had married sisters. The text says Thomas Powell published in 1630 the Attourney's Academy, a book dedicated to Francis, Lord Verulam and Viscount St. Albanes. The text says that in the Mirrour of State and Eloquence, published in 1656, the frontispiece is a very bad copy of Marshall's portrait of Bacon.
