The idea that Francis Bacon wrote the plays credited to Shakespeare had been argued for about fifty years when Andrew Lang took it on in this 1912 book. He weighs the supposed silence of contemporaries about the Stratford man, his schooling, the courtly setting of Love's Labour's Lost, Philip Henslowe's records, the Stratford monument and portraits, the First Folio and Ben Jonson's words on him. A final chapter turns to Bacon's own preoccupations.
Lang died while the book was in type, and a preface by his wife explains that the first proofs went uncorrected. Eight illustrations accompany it.
