About this book

Conflicting accounts of American and British sea battles give Theodore Roosevelt the problem he sets out to solve in this 1882 history. He compares earlier historians with naval letters, ships' logs and other records to reconstruct the War of 1812. His preface explains how disagreements over figures and national loyalties shape the evidence, while acknowledging that his own judgments may favor the American side. The volume also includes an account of the Battle of New Orleans.

The comparison of Perry's and Barclay's squadrons shows the book's method at work. Roosevelt weighs estimates of crew numbers, lists individual vessels and calculates the weight of their gunfire. He argues that simply counting guns can give a misleading picture of relative strength. Readers interested in naval warfare will find both historical narrative and detailed analysis, with tables that make the relationship between equipment, manpower and claims about a battle especially clear.
