About this book
The text of The Wilderness Hunter describes four more goats standing in a bunch rather less than a hundred yards off, to one side of a former line of fire. The text says that white goat invariably run up hill when alarmed, their one idea seeming to be to escape danger by getting above it. The text calls the white goat the fool-hen among beasts of the chase.
The text says that Webster, like his great rival for Whig leadership, Henry Clay, cared much for horses, dogs, and guns, but, though an outdoor man, had no chance to develop a love for big-game hunting. The text says that Mr. Cabot Lodge recently handed the writer a letter written to his grandfather by Webster, describing a day’s trout fishing. The text says that the last time the writer had hunted in this neighborhood was in the fall, at the height of the rutting season.
