About this book
Oxford in October 1916 is a university city reshaped by war, with soldiers passing through college gates and wounded men occupying rooms once used for study. Against this setting, Dr. Middleton takes up his position as Warden of King's College. His sister, Lady Dashwood, has arranged his lodgings, but her greater concern is his future marriage. She fears that his sense of duty and his hopes for England may leave him vulnerable to an unsuitable match.
Mrs. David G. Ritchie builds her novel around the conversation and calculations of this academic social circle. Gwendolen Scott becomes a subject of discussion, while Mrs. Potten's visits reveal how hospitality, money and reputation complicate apparently polite exchanges. The appeal lies in the friction between public ideals and private interests: a college household offers a close view of manners, family influence and the pressures surrounding the choice of a wife.
