About this book
Jack London's The Night-Born gathers pieces whose titles include The Madness of John Harned, When the World Was Young and The Mexican. A piece headed The Night-Born is set in the old Alta-Inyo Club on a warm night for San Francisco, with the brawl of the streets coming through the open windows.
The talk has led on from the Graft Prosecution until the name of O'Brien is mentioned, a promising young pugilist who was a clean-living young man with ideals and neither drank, smoked, nor swore. A race between an aeroplane and a pigeon is on when Peter Winn, looking up, sees that the pigeon is outdistancing the machine. A scene before an audience has Rivera disregarded and Spider Lagerty warning him, "You gotta last. No layin' down."
