About this book
A pair of motor-driven steel wings gives young circus performer Joe Strong a new ambition: to fly before a paying crowd. At a factory that makes circus equipment, he shows his unfinished machine to Benny Turton and Bill Watson, a veteran clown. Their doubts meet Joe's confidence in batteries, separate wing motors and foot-controlled rudders. He has invested heavily in the invention and hopes its novelty will attract an audience.
Vance Barnum's adventure novel for younger readers combines circus life with the excitement of experimental flight. Mechanical explanations sit beside lively exchanges between friends, while a runaway balloon brings Joe's judgment in the air into practical use. Readers interested in unusual flying machines will find a story built around ingenuity, public spectacle and the risks of turning an idea into an act.
