About this book
The Nō Plays of Japan presents translations by Arthur Waley, with a title page dated 1922 and an illustration captioned Young Woman's Mask. One passage traces how Nō took its present form from the work of Kwanami Kiyotsugu (1333 to 1384) and his son Seami Motokiyo (1363 to 1444). Kwanami was a priest of the Kasuga Temple near Nara, and Seami left treatises that were not published until 1908.
The plays are set out as dialogue with stage directions in brackets. In one play a messenger from the Court tells a saint that Princess Aoi is ill and asks him to come; the saint, who is practising particular austerities, agrees to follow and begins his incantations. Numbered notes explain names and places, such as Ichi-no-Tani, which means First Valley, and refer to figures such as Atsumori and Kumagai.
