About this book
The preface to Japanese Plays and Playfellows explains that its author's stay lasted half a year and that theatrical matters seemed less fully described than other subjects. The discussion of public life says there is no guarantee that freedom of the Press and public meeting will escape restrictions daily and legally imposed on the Japanese themselves.
A performance description follows figures moving in pairs along a platform, alternately kneeling and rising with arms extended or intertwined while a soloist sings. The narrator learns that the figures' gradual withdrawal signifies summer's reluctant departure, while an autumn scene places slowly drifting figures among reddening maple leaves. An encounter with an armed woman records her vigorous, skilful attack with a halberd against an opponent armed with a sword.
