About this book
The Lower Depths is presented as a drama in four acts, with an English translation credited to Jenny Covan. The stage directions furnish the centre of the room with a large table, two benches and a stool, all made of dirty, unpainted wood. The room description has Kleshtch trying keys in old locks, with bundles of keys, a battered samovar, a hammer and pincers at his feet.
The dialogue at Anna’s bed announces her death, comments that her coughing has stopped and says Kleshtch must be told. A stage direction describes a drink poured with shaking hands and then drunk, followed by an almost running departure toward the passage.
