About this book
The Nootka Sound Controversy is by William R. Manning, and its title page calls it a dissertation. The title page says the dissertation was submitted to the faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Literature in candidacy for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Department of History). A note says the Justin Winsor prize of the American Historical Association was awarded to the author of this monograph.
The contents list Chapter I, Introduction, and chapters on the English plans for occupying Nootka Sound and the Spanish plans for occupying Nootka Sound, among others. A building is described as having two stories, with a workshop and storeroom on the ground floor and a dining room and chambers for the party in the upper story. A formal visit is paid to the chief, Maquilla, to acquaint him with the intended departure and to secure his attention and friendship to the party to be left on shore.
