About this book
The account of the vikings connects fighting abroad with the defence of rights, describing fighting as the men's natural employment and rights as dependent on being defended. The discussion of the old sagas says that their familiar language allowed everybody to understand them and to be amused or taught by them. The text says that the sagas were not intended only for monks and people living in cloisters.
The account of Cnut's arrangement of England into great earldoms describes continual rivalries and jealousies between the lords of Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, and Wessex. The narrative describes Lady Godiva and Earl Leofric spending their lives and wealth chiefly in support of religious houses and the churches' good works in Mercia.
