About this book
The Northern Iron is by George A. Birmingham. A dedicatory note says the story is the fruit of a recent holiday spent in County Antrim. The dedicatory note names, among others, Dunseveric and Ballintoy, and a morning on which the writer swam, like Neal and Una, into the Rock Pigeons' Cave.
Una asks Maurice whether he has forgotten the bait, and Maurice answers that there are three large crabs in the boat. Hope whispers that some troops are regulars and that Major Barber is in command of them. Maurice goes alone to Pleaskin Head with his father's long telescope and lies all morning on the edge of the cliff peering eastward across the sea.
