About this book
The Fall of the Grand Sarrasin, by William John Ferrar, calls itself a chronicle of Sir Nigel de Bessin, knight, of things that happened on Guernsey Island, in the Norman Seas, in and about the year one thousand and fifty-seven. The preface says its speaker brought back from the Channel Islands these pages here printed, as a kind of bundle of sketches in black and white.
A character named Brother Bernard says, “Up, lads; catch who catch can up to the Viking's tomb!” A speaker says Brother Hugo was a nobleman who had been a good knight, with a famous name hidden under a long Benedictine robe. The helm of Le Grand Sarrasin, who never showed his face to men, comes off and shows the face of my Lord Archbishop of Rouen.
