About this book
Leaving Paris in August 1916, Kathleen Burke follows the road toward the French front with an eye for the small details of life during war. Her personal account passes through Meaux, the fields of the Marne and villages busy with military traffic. Army bread, ammunition wagons and dogs trained to catch trench rats share the page with battlefield graves and the sacrifices of French families.
At Verdun, Burke watches an artillery exchange and walks through streets of damaged houses toward the citadel and trenches. Soldiers answer her questions with dry jokes, and one tells of a rabbit and its young being fed from their rations. These anecdotes give the account its human scale. Readers interested in the First World War will find a strongly sympathetic portrait of French endurance, told through observed scenes, conversations and stories gathered along the route.
