About this book
The narrator, who gives his name as Archibald Green, says he will never cease to be grateful for the hospitality he received from the O’Conors of Castle Conor. The narrator says he was about to proceed into county Mayo on business which would occupy him there for some weeks, with head-quarters at the town of Ballyglass. Ballyglass is described as not a place in which to find hotel accommodation of a luxurious kind, or much congenial society indigenous to the place itself.
The narrator says hunting gentlemen in those days were very common in county Mayo, and that his entry into Ballyglass created no sensation whatever. The narrator offers a man ten shillings besides, and says he will give them to him for the loan of this pair of slippers. The narrator says he had ridden well to the hounds that day, and he knew it.
