About this book

Official respectability looks fragile when money and ambition enter Anthony Trollope's account of London civil service. Published in 1858, The Three Clerks places government offices alongside domestic life, courtship and the pursuit of public standing. Its chapter headings move from Weights and Measures and Internal Navigation to the Woodward family, while the introduction identifies Sir Gregory Hardlines with the contemporary debate over competitive examinations.

The middle excerpt turns to an election opportunity created by Mr. M'Buffer's departure from Parliament after his involvement in a financial swindle. Undy sees a chance to revive his political career, but winning the constituency requires cash. Trollope's narrator treats the language of constitutional principle with dry irony as personal advantage shapes public conduct. The book offers readers of Victorian fiction a view of institutions through the people who seek employment, influence and recognition within them.
